Inheritance (paper 2) Flashcards
allele =
difference versions of the same gene
what is the effect of the alleles present
the alleles present / genotype operate at a molecular level to develop characteristics that can be expressed as a phenotype
dominant allele =
only 1 copy needed for it to be expressed
Recessive allele
2 copies needed for it to be expressed
genotypes
the allele the person has
homozygous
2 of the same alleles
hetrozygous
2 **different* alleles
what are inherited disorders caused by
the inheritance of certain alleles
name 2 types of inherited disorders
- Polydactyly
- Cystic fibrosis
is polydactyly caused by a dominant or recessive allele
Dominant:
- anyone who has allele will suffer disorder
- parents with polydactyly can pass it onto children
is cystic fibrosis caused by a dominant or recessive allele
recessive:
- must inherit 2 recessive cystic fibrosis alleles
- parents who have 1 allele will no suffer, but can pass it onto children . Known as carriers
what can you do to seen if unborn child has genetic disorder
embryo screening - raises economic, social and ethical issues
an ordinary human body cell contains how many pairs of chromosomes
23
how many pairs of chromosomes control characteristics and what are they called
22 = autosomes
what does that one pair determin
biological sex = heterosomes
