Phonological Intervention Flashcards
What are some approaches used for intervention?
Van Ripers (artic)
Minimal Pairs Approach
Hodson’s and Paden’s Cycle approach
What are the steps of Van Riper’s approach to intervention?
This is a motor based approach and most commonly used approach.
Auditory discrimination targets the child’s ability to distinguish between correct and incorrect production of pairs (minimal pairs).
Phonetic placement targets the child’s production of sound.
The child is given verbal instruction, physical guidance, visual feedback and modeling is done.

What are the levels of Hierarchy for goals in Van Ripers Approach?
- Auditory discrimination (“s” versus “th”)
- Sound in isolation (“s”)
- Sound in syllable (”su”)
- Sound in words (initial, final, medial) (“sock”)
- Sound in phrases/sentences (”blue sock”)
- Sound in sentences (“ I have a blue sock”)
- Sound while reading
- Sound in structured conversation
- Sound in unstructured conversation
Describe the Hodson’s and Paden’s Cycle approach to intervention
Cycles approach is a linguistic approach.
The clinician introduces the correct patterns and the child’s practices it for limited time and then returns to it during another session

Describe the steps of the cycle of the Hodsen’s and Paden’s cycle approach
- Choose phonological processes for the cycle
- Work on first cycle for a few weeks
- Go through second cycle with a different sound/class of sounds
- Go through third cycle with a different sound/class of sounds
- Go back to the first cycle and repeat
What is nonspeech oral motor therapy?
Although nonspeech oral motor exercises (NSOME) have been commonly used by speech language pathologists for decades, the research simply does not support its use in therapy that is intended to change speech sound production
What is auditory discrimination training?
It is a perceptual training where the client is thought to distinguish between the error and the target phonemes. Minimal pairs are used
