Occlusion & Tongue Thrust Flashcards
What is occlusion?
Refers to the alignment of the teeth when the jaws are closed.
What is malocclusion?
deviations in the shape and dimension of the mandible and maxilla
What is a Class I occlusion?
arches are aligned normally, some individual teeth may be misaligned
What is a Class II occlusion?
upper maxilla is protruded and lower mandible is receded (overbite, overjet)
What is a Class III occlusion?
maxilla is receded and the mandible is protruded (underbite).
What is Ankyloglossia
Ankyloglossia (tongue-tie)- frenum is attached to close to the tip of the tongue
Affect: Interdentals and alveolar sounds
What is macroglossia?
Large tongue
What is microglossia?
Small tongue
What is tongue thrust?
Deviant swallow- tongue tip pushes against the front teeth (instead of placing the tongue tip behind the alveolar ridge and the body of the tongue pushes the fluid/food posteriorly). This leads to
How does tongue thrust affect speech production?
the tongue pushes against the front teeth affecting the production of /s/, /z/, /sh/, /ch/, /3/, /d3/.
What sound are affected by occlusion and malocclusion?
Interdental, labiodental, interdental.
