Phlebotomy Flashcards
When drawing blood cultures, what should you prepare the patients skin with?
Alcohol and chlorhexidine
What are the steps of phlebotomy after removing the needle?
Confirm order, do the test, remove the needle, Apply pressure to the puncture site, dispose of the needle, apply a bandage, label the tubes.
How long should you a serum specimen tube without anticoagulant stand prior to centrifuging?
30-60 minutes.
What method should be used for venipuncture on a patient with small veins?
Butterfly needle.
What is the preferred site for a capillary puncture on an adult?
Fourth digit.
An mA has completed a blood draw. How do you ensure the proper specimen processing?
The assistant should submit a completed requisition form in accordance with the provider’s prescription.`
To avoid hemoconcentration, what action should take place?
Remove tourniquet before 1 minute has elapsed. A tourniquet impedes blood flow. Applying a tourniquet to a patient for longer than 1 min increases the possibility of hemoconcentration and can alter test results
What is the order of draws?
Yellow, Light blue, Red, Gold/tiger top, Green (light then dark), Lavender, and Gray. (YOU LIKE ROSE GOLD GLASSES LIKE GRANDMA).
What is the Yellow tube for?
Blood cultures in microbiology. (Additive is sodium polyethol sulfonate).
What is the Light Blue tube for?
Coagulation studies (PT/INR). Additive is sodium citrate.
What is the Red tube used for?
Serum determinations in chemistry. May be used for routine blood donor screening and for diagnostic for infectious disease. Common tests are Vitamins and drug levels. Additive (plastic- clot activator, glass-no additive)
What is the gold/tiger-top for?
Serum determinations in chemistry. May be used for routine blood donor screening and for diagnostic for infectious disease. Common tests are CMP, Lipid, Liver (ALT), BMP, Kidney (BUN), TSH, Ferritin, PSA. Additive is SST (Serum separator tube), clot activator and thixotropic gel.
What is the Green tube used for?
Plasma determinations in chemistry. Common test are TSH. Additives are lithium heparin for light green and sodium heparin for dark green.
What is Lavender tube for?
Whole blood hematology, immunohematology testing. Common tests are CBC, sed rate, cyclosporin, cytometry). Additive is EDTA (anticoagulant).
What is Gray tube for?
Glucose testing, lactic acid, blood alcohol. Additive is potassium oxalate and sodium fluoride.
