Schedule 1
includes substances that have a high potential for abuse and no approved medical use in the US
Schedule 2
includes substances that have high potential for abuse, are considered dangerous and can lead to physical dependence
- handwritten prescription
- no refills
Schedule 3
includes substances that have a moderate low potential for physical and psychological dependence
- must have handwritten prescription
- refill them five times in 6 months
Schedule IV
includes substances that have low potential for abuse and dependence
-refill them five times in 6 months
Schedule V
includes substances that contain limited quantities of some narcotics, usually for antidiarrheal, antitussive, and analgesic purposes. These include diphenoxylate with atropine, pregabalin, lacosamide etc. Providers must sign prescriptions for these substances, and patients may refill them five times in 6 months. Staff members may authorize refills over the phone.
