What are the clinical features of phaeochromocytoma?
Episodic
- headaches
- palpitations
- hypertension
- anxiety

Rule of 10s
What is the rule of 10s?
10% are extra-adrenal
10% bilateral
10% malignant
10% familial
What investigations are indicated for a suspected phaeochromocytoma?
ECG
24 hour urine collection
Bloods
- serum free metanephrines
- plasma catecholamines
- U+Es
- bone profile
CT AP
Genetic testing
What are metanephrines?
Breakdown product of catecholamines
What special test can be done?
I-123 MIBG scintography
What is the management for phaeochromocytoma?
Alpha blockade (phenoxybenzamine)
2 weeks later start beta blockade (propranolol)
Adrenalectomy
