Autoimmune conditions causing the destruction of B cells in the pancreas

What are the diagnostic criteria?
Fasting glucose >/= 7

What is OGTT?
Oral glucose tolerance test
Patient given 75g anhydrous glucose and measure plasma glucose 2 hours after
How should diabetic patients be managed?
Education/diet
Medication/insulin
Regular eye checks
Regular foot checks
What are complications of poorly controlled diabetes?
Vascular diseae Nephropathy Retinopathy Cataracts Neuropathy Diabetic foot ulcer
What do you need to check in urine for T1DM?
Glucose
Ketones
Infection
Albumin
What antibodies are involved in T1DM?
GAD antibodies (glutamic acid decarboxylase)
What are the types of retinopathy?
Background

What changes occur in background retinopathy?
Microaneurysms
Haemorrhages

What changes occur in pre-proliferative changes?
Cotton wool spots
Haemorrhages
