What is purpura?
Non-blanchable, pink/purple, macules/patches or papules caused by blood in skin
Causes of purpura
Coagulation defect, leaky vessels, trauma
Macular non-palpable purpura
Non-inflammatory

Small, red dots; painless
Causes of petechia
Platelet related: low platelet, or dysfuntion; non-platelet related: capillary fragility
Ecchymosis
Larger purpura, may be painful
Causes of ecchymosis
Abnormalities in coagulation
Small/medium vasculitis
Churg-Strauss, microscopic polyangiitis, Wegner’s granulomatosis, cryoglobulinemic vasculitis
Skin lesions and vessel involved
Small vessel - blisters; medium - nodules, purpura, ulcers; large - doesn’t affect skin
