Pathology of malassezia
Dimorphic - hyphae when pathogenic (TV), yeast when colonizing (seborrheic dermatitis)
Dx of candidiasis
Spores and pseudohyphae on KOH
Features of candidiasis
Scrotal involvement, satellite macules and pustules, lack of annular morphology (like in tinea cruris)
Diaper dermatitis
Irritant contact dermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis
Tinea capitis
Affects hair follicles; itching; hair loss
Seborrheic dermatitis
Inflammatory reaction to malassezia yeast
Sporotrichosis
Subcutaneous infection, starts with single nodule, ulceration, then nodular chain along lymphatics
Chromoblastomycosis
Seen in tropics, agricultural workers, injury
Mycetoma
Can be fungal or bacterial, slowly progressing, starts with foot wound; triad of edema, sinuses, granules

Asteroid body in yeast
