Reducing risk when using pesticides
Only use approved products.
Follow ALL safety precautions to the letter.
When using pesticides in edible crops (or close to edible crop) ensure that recommended intervals are adhered to.
Dispose of product and container safely.
Store produce correctly.

Part of Safety at Work Act 1974
Requires employer to investigate if pesticide use is necessary, choose least harmful chemical, undertake risk assessment and keep records of use for at least three years.
Health and Safety at Work Act 1974
Employers are duty bound to protect and ensure employee safety by:
Providing necessary training and adequate supervision.
Provide safe working systems.
Provide suitable PPE and ensure that they are used correctly.
Provide safe equipment.
Employees are responsible for ensuring that they do not endanger themselves and others and use all safety equipment correctly.
Public must not endanger themselves or others or interfere with safe working practices.

Poisonous Substances in Agriculture Regulations 1984
Poisons Act 1972
Lays down strict guidelines for use of the most harmful chemicals.
Under terms of this act some pesticides are so toxic that the purchaser will need to sign the poison register and store the chemical in a secure storage area.

Chemicals Regulation Directorate regulates plant protection products in UK.
Authorisation for Minor Use in UK
Provides further information on use of pesticide for minor use.
BREXIT and Pesticides
Since Jan 2021 all EU law relating to plant protection has be embedded in UK law; new EU legislation does not apply to the Uk.
