Cucumber Mosaic Virus Flashcards
Cucumber Mosaic Virus - general notes.
Virus that can affect a wide range of plants, causing mosaic patterns on leaves, leaf distortion, stunted growth and distorted fruit. Hosts include Cucurbitceae, Solanum lycopersicum and Latuca sativa, Delphinium, Primula and Lilium.
Cucumber Mosaic Virus - symptoms.
Stunted growth.
Mosaic patterns, lighter green shades in leaves.
Fern shaped leaves caused by reduction in size of leaf lamina.
White streaks/breaks on flowers.
Distorted fruit and reduced yields.
Cucumber Virus - life cycle.
Viruses require a vector to move from infected to non-infected plants as they have no means of dispersing themselves.
Once they enter plant tissue they take over genetic apparatus including protein synthesis, then use them to synthesise more virus particles.
Once a plant is infected the virus uses another vector which feeds on infected tissue to carry virus to a new plant host.
A number of aphid species are vector of CMV.
