Define paranoid PD:
Pervasive distrust and subconsciousness of others such that their motives are interpreted as malevolent
When does paranoid PD begin:
Early adulthood
Define schizoid PD:
pervasive pattern of detachment from social relationships and a restricted range of expression of emotions
Define schizotypical PD:
Pervasive pattern of interpersonal deficits marked by cognitive or perceptual distortions and eccentricities of behavior
Define antisocial PD:
Pervasive pattern of disregard for and violation of the rights of others occurring since 15yo
Define histrionic PD:
Pervasive pattern of excessive emotionality and attention seeking beginning by early adulthood such as:
1- sexually seductive/ provocative behavior
2- Self- dramatization, theatricality
3- Easily influenced by others
4- Considers relationships more intimate than they actually are
Define Narcissistic PD:
Pervasive pattern of grandiosity beginning by early adulthood
Need for admiration
Define borderline personality disorder:
Pervassive pattern of instability of interpersonal relationships. self image, and marked impulsivity beginning by early adulthood
What are the criteria for borderline PD Dx?
Need >5 of the 9
1- Frantic efforts to avoid real or imagined abandonment
2- Unstable and intense interpersonal relationships. alternating idealization and devolution
3- Persistently unsable self image or sense of self
4- Impulsivity that is potentially self damaging
5- Recurrent suicidal behavior or threats or self mutilation
6- Mood libility and reactivity
7- Chronic feelings of emptiness
8- Frequent or intense anger outbursts
9- Transient paranoid idealization or severe dissociate symptoms
Define avoidant PD:
Pervasive pattern of social inhibition beginning by early adulthood
Inhibited in social situations because of feelings of inadequacy
Hypersensitive to criticism or rejection
Define obsessive- compulsive PD:
Preoccupied w/ details, rules, lists, schedules
Prefectionism interferes with task completion
Excessively devoted to work
scrupulous about mrality, ethics and values
Micromanages, rigid, stubborn
Define dependent PD:
Prevasive and excessive need to be taken care of
Indecisive
Submissive and clingy
Difficulty expressing diagreement
Lack of self confidence, helpless, feeling
Which PD’s are more common in women?
Paranoid, avoidant, dependent
Which PD is more common in men?
Antisocial
What are the risk factors for PD?
Not married, impovershed, poorly educated
What factors can exacerbate a PD?
Substances, medical/ psychotic disorders, stress, close relationships
Neurotransmitters involved in PDs?
decreased serotonin?
Outcome for people with PDs?
Traits will cntinue throughout life but might eventually not meet disorder criteria
Treatment for Paranoid, schizoid, schizotypical PDs?
Antipsychotic meds, psychotherapy
Treatment for antisocial, histrionic, narcissistic, and borderline PD?
Mood stabilizers, antipsychotics, psychotherapy
Stay away from Benzo’s!
Treatment for avoidant, dependent and obsessive compulsive PD?
CBT, psychodynamic therapy
