What is personality?
These are the underlying traits and characteristics that compel individuals to act the way they do.
What did franz Gahl believe?
Bumps on a persons skull could be used to determine their personality traits.
Who said that only 1/10th of our mind is conscious?
Sigmund Freud. He also said that unacceptable urges and desires are repressed in our unconscious mind.
What are the sections of the unconscious mind?
ID - Most primitive and devious urges
Superego - Moral compass
Ego - Rational Compromises to give balance between ego and superego.
What is neurosis?
It is caused when there is an imbalance between the ego the superego and the ID.
What is reaction formation?
When someone act opposite of how they really feel.
What is temperement?
The inborn personality traits.
What is the five factor model of personality?
- Openness -
- Conscientiousness - Competence and self discipline
- Extroversion -
- Agreeableness - Cooperative and trust-worthy
- Neuroticism - Tendency to experience negative emotions
What is the HEXACO model of personality?
- Honesty - humility
- Emotionality
- The rest are the same as the Five factor model
What are the different methods of assessing personality?
- Self report inventories - Are objective multiple choice exams. (MMPI (Minnesota multi phasic personality inventory))
- Projective testing - Utilizes one of the defense mechanisms proposed by Freud.
What are some projective testing methods? and what limited their usefulness?
Rodscharch Inkblot test (RIT) - Uses images and asks participants what they see.
- Thematic application test (TAT) - Person is shown images and is asked to make up a story with them.
- Rutter incomplete sentence blank (RISB) - Participants fill in the blank on some questions.
