Personality Flashcards
What is personality
Unique psychological makeup
What does the trait theory suggest
Nature approach- That individuals are born with Innate characteristics- aspects of players personality are stable and innate.
What is the social learning theory
What’s the process
Nurture approach- develop aspects of personality through socialization by copying people we hold in high esteem.
Primary and secondary socialisation.
We copy behaviour that is successful and reinforced to us.
Observe- identity- reinforce- copy
What’s the interactions perspective
Combines trait and social learning theory to predict behaviour in specific situation.
B= f (pxe) - behaviour is a function of personality and environment
A change in environment = a change in behaviour.
Interactionist theory-
What’s The Hollander approach and give example.
Suggests personality is made up of
The core- stable values and believes
Typical response- usual response of the player in specific situation
Role-related behaviour- adapt behaviour in specific environment
Eg- core- hard working
Typical response- attacker who tries hard makes as many runs necessary to find space and get the ball
Role related behaviour- however in a hard game the team are struggling to defend player may fall back and help them get the ball away.
What are the two approaches to weather or not personality can predict behaviour
Credulous approach- believe personality can predict behaviour
Sceptical approach- don’t believe personality can predict behaviour
How can a coach use the interactionst theory to improve performance
-Coach cam predict agresisve behaviour and take player off which can avoid red card.
-create challenging situations in training to help players cope- eg Get nervous players to train in front of a crowd
-Coach can encourage players to adapt to specific situations eg calm down/ encourage nervous player before taking a pen.
