How are attitudes formed

A

Through socialisation picking up other people’s opinions and values.
We learn them from significant others.
Our attitudes are formed by familiarization and reinforcement.

What is the triadic model

A

CAB
Cognitive- beliefs and thoughts eg believe in the benefits of exercise
Affective- feeling/emotions eg enjoy training and exercising
Behavioural- actions/ intended behaviour eg they train/ exercise more

A

Cognitive dissonance
Persuasive communication

How can cognitive dissoancne change attitudes

A

New information is given to a performer to cause disharmony and make them question their existing beliefs, to motivate change.
New information has to outweigh old information.
Change the components of the triadic model.

Cognitive- give new information
Affective - creates new emotions
Behavioural- act on new beliefs.

How does persuasive communication change attitudes

A

Effective communication to promote change
-New information has to outweigh the old information
Message needs to be given from someone of high status to be more effective
Situation and timing of message has to be right and has to be understood
