Periodisation Flashcards
What is periodisation
Structuring your training programme in a way such that you peak at the right moment
Name and explain the 3 cycles involved in periodisation
Macrocycle- the large period which involves a long term performance goal
Mesocycle-usually a 4-12 week period of training with a specific focus
Microcycle- a description of a week/a couple of training units that is within a mesocycle
Name and explain the 3 parts of the largest cycle in periodisation
Preparation phase: general conditioning and developing fitness levels
Competition period: performer refines skills and techniques and maintains fitness levels
Transition: Rest and Recovery allows athlete to recharge physically and mentally after a macrocycle
What is tapering
A reduction in the volume of traning prior to a major competition
What is double periodisation
Some sports may require an athlete to peak twice within a season/specific time frame
E.g. Champions League and World Cup in the same season
