Cardiovascular Drift Flashcards
Define cardiovascular drift
An increase in heart rate despite working at the same intensity
Describe the process of CV drift
As athletes exercise, they begin to sweat which leads to fluid loss
This fluid loss leads to the loss of plasma in the blood, causing blood to become thicker and more viscous, increasing resistance to blood flow
High blood viscosity decreases stroke volume
And to maintain a high cardiac output during exercise, heart rate will increase to compensate for the decrease in stroke volume
How long after the start of exercise does CV drift trend to occur
20 minutes
What must an athlete do in response to CV drift
Rehydrate
In what conditions will exaggerate CV drift
Hot conditions
How can CV be avoided?
Ice jacket
Regular water consumption
Ice bath pre event
