Blood Pressure Flashcards
Define blood pressure
Te force that blood exerts on the walls of the blood vessels
When might blood pressure increase
-When atherosclerosis, fatty deposits in arteries, increasing resistance in the vessel, which will increase blood pressure
-Blood pressure also increases during exercise
What does the higher value in a blood pressure reading represent
Systolic value, when the heart contracts and ejects blood
What does the lower value in a blood pressure reading represent
Diastolic value, when the heart relaxes and fills up with blood
What effect does exercise have on blood pressure
Increases blood pressure as more blood is returned to the heart meaning the heart fills up more and a stronger more elastic contraction is required to push blood out of the heart
Why might someone have chronic high blood pressure?
Due to the build of fatty deposits in the blood vessels increasing the resistance which leads to increased blood pressure
What is the equation for blood pressure
Blood pressure = flow x resistance
Where is the force of the blood generated
The heart
