Periodic Trends Flashcards
Atomic size
Is a function of electron configuration
Atomic size increases:
As you move towards the left and down in the periodic table
Isoelectric species
Two atoms or ions that have the same number of electrons
Ionization energy
Energy required for the removal of an electron from a neutral atom; requires input of energy (endergonic process)
Ionization increases
The smaller the atom; moving up and two the right
Electron affinity
The amount of energy involved in adding a single electron to an isolated gas-phase atom; process liberated energy (exergonic process)
Electron affinity increases or become more negative
As you move up and to the right on the periodic table
Electronegativity
The ability of an atom in a molecule to polarize binding electrons toward itself
Electronegativity increase
As you move up and to the right on the periodic table
Hierarchy of electronegativity

Acidity
Increases as one moves down and to the right on the periodic table
Basicity
Increases as one moves up and to the left on the periodic table
