What is peri-operative care?

What is intraoperative care?
maintained airway and patent venous access- skin prep happens
What happens during intraoperative care?
clipping, scrubbing, bandaging limbs
body temp
monitoring
intraoperative medication (pain relief/ pre-meds)
Haemorrhage considerations-
weigh swab
external/ internal?
collection via suction machine and measure
Tourinquet considerations-
applied inches above wound- adjust tightness to stop blood flow
15mins then moved- tissue recovery
Swab count considerations-
count swabs prior to first incision
maintain track of swabs in and out
reduces risk being left internally- infection/ additional surgery
What are the ways of recognising pain?
vocalisation
touch response
demeanor
posture/ activity
eating
What are the common signs of pain in cats, dogs and rabbits?
reduced appetite
increase TPR
decreased grooming
vocalisation
immobility
hunched
