Patient Preparation Flashcards
What is the difference between a circulatory nurse and a scrub nurse?
circulatory nurse: comes in and out of theatre, passing equipment- higher chance of spreading infection
scrub nurse: remains in theatre, maximising protection against bacterial pathogens through patient exposure
What are clipper preparation considerations?
regularly sharpened
grain removes bulk hair- closer cut
5-15cm beyond incision site
straight/ neat edges
do not let get too hot
Where is clipping carried out?
prep room, prevents contamination in theatre
What are skin preparation considerations?
chlorhexidine (1:1)- povidone iodine solution
lint free swabs
clean/ dirty hand
follow initial prep protocol- 60% isopropyl alcohol
List the 3 different skin prep techniques…
concentric circles
back and forth
chlora prep
Concentric Circles-
bullseye
outwards in, until margin reached
disinfectant removed via swabs
3-5 times, no friction
Back and Forth-
applied between two bodies- motion provides friction
removes bacteria on epidermal surface
Chlora Prep-
chlorhexidine 1:1- iodine solution, intial prep protocol
70% isopropyl alchohol
What are the bathing preparation considerations?
prior surgery
considered for certain procedures
pre-operative client instructions
What are the eyes and MM preparation considerations?
ocular lubriction when clipping
dilute solitions- povidone iodine (less irritant)
irrigated wirh saline- after clip
What are foot bandaging preparation considerations?
distially to proximally
2 fingers
cohesive dressing (only sticks to itself)
What is an esmarch bandage?
soft rubber, expels venous blood from limb
What are the patient positioning considerations prior to surgery?
surgery dependant
VS visibility
