Perception Flashcards
Inattentional Blindness
Inability to see an object or person in our midst
Selective Attention (Cocktail Party Effect)
Focus of conscious awareness on a particular stimulus
Change Blindness
Failed to notice a change in the individual asking for directions
Gestalt
Sensations are processed according to rules that result in meaningful whole perceptions
Proximity
Group nearby figures together
Similarity
Group figures that are similar
Continuity
Percieve continuous patterns
Closure
Fill in gaps
Connectedness
Spots, lines, and areas are seen as a unit when connected
Figure and Ground (Objects and Surroundings)
Organization of the visual field into objects (figures) that stand out from their surroundings (ground)
Monocular
One eye required to see depth
Binocular
Two eyes
Retinal Disparity
Images from the two eyes differ; this is how 3D works as well
Convergence
Two eyes move inward to see near objects and outward to see faraway objects
Relative Size
Percieve the one that casts a smaller retinal image to be farther away
Interposition
Closer objects blocks distant object
Relative Clarity
Hazy objects seen as more distant
Texture Gradient
Indistinct (fine) texture signals an increasing distance
Relative Height
Percieve objects that are higher in our field of vision to be farther away than those that are lower
Linear Perspective
More the lines converge, the greater their percieved distance
Relative Brightness
Given two identical objects, the dimmer one appears to be farther away
Phi Phenomenon
Lights flash at a certain speed they tend to present illusions of motion
Perceptual Constancy
Percieving objects as unchanging even as illumination and retinal image change; color, shape, size
Stroboscopic Movement
Movement is experienced when the objects appears to undergo a change in its location
Parapsychology
Study of paranormal phenomena; ESP
Telepathy
Mind-to-mind communication
Clairvoyance
Perception of remote events
Precognition
Predicting future events
Psychokinesis
Moving objects with your brain
