Learning Flashcards
Classical Conditioning (Ivan Pavlov)
Organism comes to associate two stimuli
Learning
Relatively permanent change in behavior due to experience
Unconditioned Stimulus (UCS)
Unconditionally - automatically and naturally - triggers a response
Unconditioned Response (UCR)
Unlearned, naturally occuring response to the unconditioned stimulus
Conditioned Stimulus (CS)
After association with an unconditioned stimulus, comes to trigger a conditioned response
Conditioned Response (CR)
Learned response to a previously neutral conditioned stimulus
Generalization
Tendency to respond to stimuli similar to the CS
Discrimination
Learned ability to distinguis between a conditioned stimulus and other stimuli
Behaviorism (John B. Watson)
Study of behavior without reference to unobservable mental processes
John B. Watson (Little Albert)
Conditioned fear into an infant; Albert generalized his fears into other furry objects
Operant Conditioning
Behavior is strengthened if followed by reinforcement or diminished if followed by punishment
Operant Chamber (Skinner Box)
Bar or key that an animal manipulated to obtain a reinforcer like food or water
Shaping
Reinforcers guide behavior towards the desired target behavior through successive approximations
Positive Reinforcement
Any event that strengthens the behavior
Negative Reinforcement
Removal of a punishment or an oversize stimulus; it STRENGTHENS behavior
