mcgurk and mcdougl
what did mcgurk and mcdougl find
compared 100 delinquent and 100 non-delinquient collage students and found that the delinquent group had higher PEN scores
what does mcgurk and mcdougls experiment show about PEN
t/f suggesting that delinquent groups and PEN scores link to criminal behaviour increasing the validity of the theory
who else supported the idea of PEN
eysenck
what did eysenck find
compared the eysenck personality inventory of prisoners with non-criminals scores and found that criminals have a higher score of the PEN
how does esenck’s research support the PEN theory
t/f criminals have a higher eysenck personality score than non-criminals linking them to criminal behaviour thus imcreasing the validity of the theory
what is a weaknes with PEN
farrington
what did farrington find
reviewed 16 studies of the relationship between the different elements of PEN measures with criminal convictions. they found that in majority of cases offenders scored higher on p and n but not e
how does farringtons research then oppose the PEN personality theory of behaviour
t/f suggesting that not all elements of PEN scores are linked with human behaviour reducing the validity of the theory
what is anouther weakness of the role of PEN personality
reductionist
why could the PEN theory be considered reductionist
becuase personality cannot account for all aspects of criminal behaviour. it doesn’t present a holistic approach to criminal behaviour wich can also be attribute to nurture factors such as enviroment and social learning theory not just personality
how does reductionism oppose the PEN personality theory
t/f PEN personality cannot fully be accounted for as an explination of criminal behaviour as it isn’t a reductionist explination as it overlooks other influentual features such as enviroment
