labeling theory evaluation Flashcards
what is a supporting research of the labeling theory
lieberman et al
what did lieberman find
found that juiviniles who had been previously been arrested where more likely to commit crimes that those who had not
what does liebermans research show us about labelling theory
t/f increases the validity of the theory as juvinilles who had previously been labelled as criminals then fullfilled this prophecy
what else can be used to support this theory
it works in conjunction with other theories
what does it mean when this theory works in conjunction with other theories
according to self-fullfiling prophecy theory a labell needs to be created and individual treated in accordance to this before label can be fulllfilled
what does this suggest about labelling theory
t/f increases the validity of labelling therory as it is supported by other theories
what is a weakness of labeling theory
reductionist
how can labeling theory be seen as reductionist
it can br seen as reductionist as the theory only accounts for social factors influenciong the role of criminal behaviour and not inate factors suchas the role of hormones and genes
what does it being reductionist mean for the theory in all
t/f this isn’t a holistic explanation of criminal behavior as it doesn’t consider the role of nature
what is anouther weakness of labelling theory
sutherland
what did sutherland find
suggests that males and females are socilasied differently and girls are socialised to be supervised and controlled where as boys are supervised to be more aggressive. these labels cause more boys to engage in crime
how does sutherlands research critise the labeling theory
t/f the idea of labelling theroy causing criminal behaviour is not generalisable to all the population as boys and girls are given diffrerent labels leading to a differance in criminal behaviour
