what was howell et als aim
to see whether anger managment is more affective in producing change that no treatment for violent offenders
what was howell et als sample
418 male pp reffered to anger managment program in south and western australia
73% had not compleated an anger managment program
what was howell et als procedure
pp attended programs that lasted approximately 20 hrs over 10 sessions
programmes used cbt principles including structured exercises focusing on skills provercation and relaxation
what other mesaures where taken after treatment in the procedure
self-rapport data- question airs that included measurews on the type and severity of anger from novaco anger scale
staff observations where also included where staff also completed an observational rating scale for each pp
what where howell et als findings
in anger managment group there was a slight improvement in anger control after anger managment from a mean of 20.7 to a mean of 22.2 after treatment
what did howell conclude
the overall impact of the anger maanagment programmes was small and the completion of an anger questionaair even without treatment may have small benefit in it’s self
give a strength of howells study
qualatative dtata was gathered
how was qualatative data being gathered a strength
howell used questionaires wich included the novaco anger scale on the type and strenght of anger shown. this yeilded quanataive data wich is objective and easy to analyse
how does the idea of yeilding qualataive dat imorove howells study
t/f the findings on the role of amp in treating criminal offenders is objective and easy to analyze increasing the validity of the findings
what is a weakness of howells study
population validity
how is population validity a weakness
howell use 418 male offenders detained in prison. the study and all pp originated from australia
what does the population valididty mean
t/f this is an andro and ethnocentric sample meaning the findings on the effectivness of amp inn reducing anger in offenders is ungeneralisable to a wider population
what is anouther strength of howell
mundane realism
how is mundane realism a strength
all data obtained was naturally occouring within the amp that the offenders where compleating as part of prison activities
what does mundane realism mean for the study
t/f increasing the ability for offender to controll their anger and behaviour from the skills learnt in amp was naturally occouring and can be generalised to anger managment in everyday life
what is anouther weakness of howell
cause and effect
how is cause and effect a weakness
as the data gathered on the offenders was taken during their time in prison when they where completing amp, and so may have shown social desirability bias as they wanted to exhibit less agressive behaviour and controll their anger inorder to be released from prison earilier
how does cause and effect oppose howell
t/f the findings of amp in being able to improve control over anger in offenders lacks validity
