cbt treatment for offenders Flashcards
how does cbt work in criminal psych
emphasis of therapy to change thoughts and behaviour that needs to be controlled
what is required before the start of the cbt
at the start of each session each person will nedd to ‘check-in’ wich is where they briefly describe how they feel they describe their day or talk about their progress with the rest of the group
what are the three stages of cbt in crim
cognative preperation
skill acquisition
application practice
what is cognative preperation
the individual is asked to think about their own patterns of anger and to think about the effects of their anger.
they will be asked to keep an anger diary
what is skill aquasition
giving offenders skills so they can controll their anger
e.g using relaxation techniques, or rehearsing thoughts about controlling behaviour
what is application practice
the individual is encouraged to practive their skills through role play
what is the chosen cbt for offenders
anger management program (AMP)
what is a strength of amp
supporting evidance from irland
what did irland find
looked at 50 young offenders and used self-rapport data they found a reduction in anger they felt after program - 92% showed improvement
what does irlands supporting research mean
t/f irlands evidance shows that amp derived from cbt can reduce anger
what is a strength of amp
supporting research research
who’s research can support amp
law
what did law find
evaluated 4 anger managment programmes and found prisoners were able to control their anger to a greater extent after the programm
how does laws evidance then suppport amp
t/f laws evidnace shows how amp can contribute to offenders being able to control their anger due to amp thus increasing the validity of amp
how can law be critisied
however law found that after 8 sessions only 1 individual showed any improvement
what does laws critising research then mean for amp
t/f reducing the validity of amp
what is anouther weakness of amp
cannot treat all offenders
why can’t amp treat all offernders
amp cannot help offenders who have commited crimes that are not fueled by anger such as shoplitfitng or crimes of passion of psychotic tendancies
what does this mean if amp cannot treat all offenders
t/f amp treatment is not a holistic example of cbt treatment and only treats offenders with anger issues
what is a strenght of amp
gives offenders skills for life
how does amp give offenders skills for life
amp provides offenders with skills they can use fore the rest of their life to help controll their anger such as deep relaxation.
how does obtaining these skills for life support amp
t/f by having these skills for life it prepares offenders for when they re-intergrate into society and prepares them allowing them to not be a threat to other individuals
what is a weakness of amp
reductionist
how is amp reductionist
amp only works of the principles of nurture and doesn’t adress nature principles such as an imbalnce in hormones that can attribute to criminal behaviour
what does this being reductionist mean for amp
t/f this isn’t a holistic treatment for anger within criminals and so is a reductionist treatment for offenders and so may not be effective
