pelvis myology Flashcards
1
Q

transverse abdominis
2
Q
transverse abdominis
A
*Origin- lateral third of inguinal ligament, anterior ⅔ of inner lip of iliac crest, thoracolumbar fascia and inner surface of costal cartilages 7-12
*Insertion- linea alba and pubic crest
*Action- compresses the abdominal cavity, acts as a muscular ‘corset’, raises intra-abdominal pressure, coughing/sneezing
*Nerve- thoracoabdominal (T7-11), subcostal (T12) and ilioinguinal (L1)

Q
what does the pelvic floor do
A
- Made up of levator ani and coccygeus
- Cover the underneath opening of the pelvis
- Separates the pelvic cavity and the perineal region
- Provides support for the pelvic viscera
- Should always be taught – relax during urination/defecation then
tighten back up - Will contract further during
cough/sneeze etc – to counteract sudden increased intra-abdominal pressure
4
Q
how does the pelvic floor differ in women
A
- Pelvic cavity is larger in females to
accommodate birth canal - More at risk of pathology compared to
males
5
Q
how does the pelvic floor differ in men
A
supports the bladder and bowel organs
