Define PID
Infection of the uterus and/or fallopian tubes causing inflammation
What is the epidemiology of PID?
1:50 sexually active women
What causes PID?
Bacterial infection
-Commonly STI: chlamydia (1st), gonorrhoea (2nd)
Non-STI Infection
-Giving birth
Insertion IUD
Termination
PID can develop weeks or months after being infected with STI
What are the clinical features of PID?
Lower abdominal pain*
Vaginal bleeding:
- heavy
- between periods
- after sex
Pain during sex
Abnormal discharge
Fever
Low back pain
How is PID investigated?
Cervical swab and/or urethral swab
Laparoscopy w/ biopsy
What are the complication of PID?
- Subfertility, scarring and damage to fallopian tubes
- Ectopic pregnancy
- Increased risk of miscarriage, premature birth, still birth
- Chronic pain inc. pain during sex
- Increased Reiter’s syndrome (uncommon)
How s PID managed?
GENERAL
Condom use
MEDICAL
Antibiotics
-Oral ofloxacin + metronidazole for 14 days
-Preg? erythromycin + metronidazole
-Finish course (no sex until you and partner finish treatment)
CONTACT TRACING
-Any sexual partners within last 6 months - men often no symptoms
