A

What causes PID?

A

Bacterial infection
-Commonly STI: chlamydia (1st), gonorrhoea (2nd)

Non-STI Infection
-Giving birth
Insertion IUD
Termination

PID can develop weeks or months after being infected with STI

What are the clinical features of PID?

A

Lower abdominal pain*

Vaginal bleeding:

  • heavy
  • between periods
  • after sex

Pain during sex
Abnormal discharge
Fever
Low back pain

How is PID investigated?

A

Cervical swab and/or urethral swab

Laparoscopy w/ biopsy

What are the complication of PID?

A
  • Subfertility, scarring and damage to fallopian tubes
  • Ectopic pregnancy
  • Increased risk of miscarriage, premature birth, still birth
  • Chronic pain inc. pain during sex
  • Increased Reiter’s syndrome (uncommon)

How s PID managed?

A

GENERAL
Condom use

MEDICAL
Antibiotics
-Oral ofloxacin + metronidazole for 14 days
-Preg? erythromycin + metronidazole
-Finish course (no sex until you and partner finish treatment)

CONTACT TRACING
-Any sexual partners within last 6 months - men often no symptoms
