What causes BV?
A
- Multiple organisms
- Initially anaerobic organisms e.g. gardnerella
- Consequent fall in lactic acid results in increased aerobic lactobacilli

What are the risk factors of BV?
A
- Sexual activity (although not thought of as STI)
- Afro-Caribbean
- IUCD
- Vaginal douching
- Bubble baths
- Smoking

What are the complications of BV?
A
Endometriosis PID Late miscarriage Preterm delivery PROM Low birth weight

What are the clinical features of BV?
A
- Grey/white discharge
- Increased vaginal pH
- Fishy odour (whiff test)

What are the investigation of BV?
A
HIGH VAGINAL SWAB
-Clue cells

Q
How is BV treated?
A
Metronidazole
- no alcohol
- can now be used throughout pregnancy (high doses still not recommended)
