What causes chlamydia?
Chlamydia Trachomatis
Gram -ve Bacteria
What are the risk factors for chlamydia?
STI
- Young age (risk behaviour)
- Non-barrier contraception
- Recent change in sexual partner
- > 2 sexual partners a year
What are the complications of chlamydia?
GENTIOURINARY
PID
Infertility (female mainly - poss male)
Urethral stricture and scarring in male
OBSTETRIC Ectopic pregnancy Prom Preterm IUGR
NEONATAL
Conjunctivitis - certain strains in Africa can cause blindness
What are the clinical features of chlamydia?
Asymptomatic*
Vaginal discharge
Vague abdo pain
Postcoital bleeding
REITER’S SYNDROME
- Conjunctivitis
- Uveitis
- Arthritis
How is chlamydia investgated?
ENDOCERVICAL SWAB
How is chlamydia treated?
MEDICAL
-1g AZITHROMYCIN
OR
-DOXYCYCLINE for 7 days
What is the epidemiology of chlamydia?
Most common STI
- 10% of sexually active 15-25yr olds
- 50% chance of infection on one time exposure
What is the screening program for chlamydia?
Not official screening program but free testing promoted by NHS in ‘R U Clear’
- Eligible to under 25’s
- Text (SMS) details to the service, and they send out a pack in the post
- ‘Pee in the pot’ and send it back
- Results sent out via SMS text messaging
