HSV-1 (cold sores) and HSV-2 (genital lesions)
BUT now considerable overlap between the two

What are the clinical features of HSV infections?
A
primary infection: may present with a severe gingivostomatitis
- cold sores
- painful genital ulceration
- Dysuria
- Lymphadenopathy
- Systemic unwellness

How is HSV infections managed?
A
Aciclovir

What are the precautions undertaken with HSV flare during pregnancy?
A
- Elective caesarean section at term is advised if a primary attack of herpes occurs during pregnancy at > 28 weeks gestation
- Recurrent herpes who are pregnant should be treated with suppressive therapy and be advised that the risk of transmission to their baby is low
