What are the causative organisms of PID and which is the most common?
A
- Chlamydia trachomatis - the most common cause
- Neisseria gonorrhoeae
- Mycoplasma genitalium
- Mycoplasma hominis

What are some of the clinical features of PID?
A
- lower abdominal pain
- fever
- deep dyspareunia
- dysuria and menstrual irregularities may occur
- vaginal or cervical discharge
- cervical excitation

What are some complications of PID?
A
- Infertility - the risk is as high as 10-20% after a single episode.
- Chronic pelvic pain
- Ectopic pregnancy

What is the management for PID?
A
- Screen - either vaginal swab or urine for chlamydia and gonorrhoea.
- Low threshold for treatment.
- Oral ofloxacin + oral metronidazole
OR
- intramuscular ceftriaxone + oral doxycycline + oral metronidazole
- BASHH recommend removal of IUDs.
