Ovarian Cysts: Types Flashcards
What is the other condition that can cause pseudomyxoma peritonei?
Appendix cancer
Which cyst is most likely to have skin, appendages, hair and teeth?
A Dermoid cyst
What is the median age of diagnosis of a dermoid cyst?
30 years old
What is pseudomyxoma peritonei?
A clinical condition caused by cancerous cells (mucinous adenocarcinoma) that produce abundant mucin or gelatinous ascites.[1] The tumors cause fibrosis of tissues and impede digestion or organ function, and if left untreated, the tumors and mucin they produce will fill the abdominal cavity. This will result in compression of organs and will destroy the function of colon, small intestine, stomach, or other organs.
Which cysts arise from the ovarian epithelial surface?
Benign epithelial tumours
- Commonest type of ovarian cyst
- Due to non-rupture of the dominant follicle or failure of atresia in a non-dominant follicle
- Commonly regress after several menstrual cycles
Follicular cysts
What are the second most common cause of benign epithelial tumour?
Mucinous cystadenoma
How can you remember that serous cystadenoma is the most common benign epithelial tumour?
Because it resembles the most common type of ovarian cancer - serous carcinoma.
What % of dermoid cysts are bilateral?
10-20%
Cysts are divided up into what categories?
- Physiological (Functional) cysts
- Benign germ cell tumours
- Benign epithelial tumours
- Benign sex cord stromal tumours.
Name 2 types of physiological cysts (functional cysts)
- Follicular cysts
- Corpus luteum (Luteal) cysts.
Name 2 types of benign epithelial tumours (arise from surface eipthelium of ovary).
- Serous cystadenoma
- Mucinous cystadenoma
What is the natural course of a follicular cyst?
It usually regresses after several menstrual cycles.
What is the most common benign epithelial tumour?
A serous cystadenoma
What are the symptoms of a dermoid cyst?
It is usually asymptomatic
