What is the combined vaginal ring called?
Nuvaring
If the Nuvaring is expelled for less than 3 hours, what can you do?
Is additional contraception needed?
Rinse the ring with cool water and reinsert immediately.
No additional contraception is needed.
If the Nuvaring remains outside of the vagina for more than 3 hours, what should you do?
Do you need contraception?
If the Nuvaring remains outside the vagina for more than 3 hours or if the user does not know when the ring was expelled then contraceptive protection may be reduced.
Contraception may be required depending on what week of the cycle.
If the Nuvaring remains outside of the vagina for more than 3 hours & it’s week 1-2 of the cycle, what should you do?
Rinse the ring with cool water and reinsert.
Use additional precautions for the next 7 days.
If the Nuvaring remains outside of the vagina for more than 3 hours & it’s week 3 of the cycle, what should you do?
Two options are available:
- Insert a new ring to start a new cycle.
- Allow a withdrawal bleed and insert a new ring no later than 7 days after ring was expelled. (You can only do this if ring was in for 7 days before expulsion)
What should you do if a ring breaks during use?
Remove it and insert a new ring immediately.
Barrier contraception should be used for 7 days fo the new cycle.
What if there is a delay in the insertion of a new ring at the start of a new cycle?
A new ring should be inserted asap
Barrier contraception should be used for 7 days fo the new cycle.
If intercourse during the ring-free interval then assume pregnancy.
If the Nuvaring is delayed in being removed?

Left in for up to 1 week - no additional contraceptive needed.
- Observe the 7 day ring-free interval and insert a new ring thereafter.
- If more than 1 week - protection may be reduced and therefore pregnancy should be ruled out.
