What is the role of epidemiology
Epidemiology is the study of the patterns and causes of health and disease in populations, and the application of this study is to improve health by, identifying issues. Epidemiology shows the basic picture of health.

- Life expectancy
Do they measure everything about health
No. very bais as it just measures the negative aspects of health and doesn’t measure the positive aspects, therefore cannot fully give a great overall perception of health

- Social justice Principles(Equity, Diversity, supportive environments)
- Priority population groups
- Prevalence of Condition
- Potential for prevention and early detection
- Costs to the individual and community
Why is it important to prioritise

Assess the impact of a growing and aging population
- The health system is needing to care for more elderly. Due to advancements in technology and medicine people nowadays have a higher life expectancy, and furthermore now a higher rate of getting cancer.
- It’s taking a burden on the Australian economy as many people tend to go part-time work instead of full-time work to look after their loved ones.
- There is an increase of demand for health service workers as well as volunteer workers.
Range and types of health care facilities and services
- Institutions - Hospitals, Nurshing Home
- Non-institutions - GP, research group
- Publicly Funded - Emergency care, Pharmeceatical benefit Scheme
- Privately Funded - Dentistry and Physiotherapy.
What are the responsibility for Health facilities
- Government - Primary health services, Public + Private Hospitals
- State - Funding for most Hospitals and community
- Private - All health Practitioners
Equity of Access of health Services
Not very equitable. For example, Rural - Too far away….. ATSI - due to area, waiting times and cost
Impact of emerging new treatment and technology on health care
Cost = more expensive
Access = More accessable
Early detection = Now improved
