PBL3 Flashcards
Name the salivary glands
- parotid gland
- submandibular gland
- sublingual gland
Where is the parotid gland located?
inferior and anterior to the ears, between the skin and the masseter muscle
How does the parotid gland secrete saliva?
secretes saliva into the oral cavity via a parotid duct that pierces the buccinator muscle
Where is the submandibular gland located?
found in the floor of the mouth and enters the oral cavity lateral to the lingual frenulum
How does the submandibular gland secrete saliva?
the submandibular duct runs under the mucosa on either side of the midline of the floor of the mouth
Where is the sublingual gland located?
lie beneath the tongue and superior to the submandibular glands
How does the sublingual gland secrete saliva?
their ducts, the lesser sublingual ducts, open into the floor of the mouth in the oral cavity proper
Describe the physiology of the salivary glands
sight/smell typically initiates salivation
once food is injested, large amounts of saliva is secreted
Describe the innervation of the salivary glands
the parasympathetic division of the facial nerve supplies most salivary glands except for the parotid gland which is supplied by the glossopharyngeal nerve (CNIX)
Which nerve innervates the parotid gland?
glossopharyngeal nerve (CNIX)
Which nerve innervates the sublingual gland?
facial nerve (CNVII)
Which nerve innervates the submandibular gland?
facial nerve (CNVII)
Describe the consequences of severing salivary ducts
- a salivary mucocele can result from a severed, damaged, or blocked salivary duct
- typically occurs in the inner surface of the lower lip
- spontaneously resolve
What is a salivary mucocele?
A type of mucus like cyst
