Anatomy of the cranial cavity Flashcards
How is the cranial cavity divided?
3 cranial fossae
What are the cranial fossae
- Anterior
- Middle
- Posterior
What is the anterior cranial fossae?
The roof of the orbits
accommodates the frontal lobes of the brain
What is the middle cranial fossae?
Accommodates the temporal lobes of the brain
What is the posterior cranial fossae?
Accommodates the cerebellum, pons and medulla oblongata of the brain
What structures are found within the foramen magnum?
- medulla oblongata
- meninges
- vertebral arteries
- meningeal branches of the vertebral arteries
- Spinal roots of the accessory nerves (CN XI)
What structure is found within the hypoglossal canal?
The hypoglossal nerve (CNXII)
What structures are found within the jugular foramen?
- inferior petrosal sinus
- glossopharyngeal nerve (IX)
- vagus nerve (CN X)
- Accessory nerve (CN XI)
- Sigmoid sinus
- Posterior meningeal artery
What structures are found within the internal acoustic meatus?
- Facial nerve (CN VII)
- vestibulochochlear nerve (CNVIII)
- Labyrinthine artery
What structures are the two hiatuses within the cranial cavity for?
The greater and lesser petrosal nerves
CN VII and CN IX resepctively
What structures are found within the carotid canal?
- The internal carotid artery
- The internal carotid nerve plexus
What structure is found within the foramen lacerum?
The artery of pterygoid canal and the nerve of pterygoid canal
What structures are found within the foramen spinosum?
- Middle meningeal artery and vein
- Meningeal branch of the mandibular nerve
What structures are found within the foramen ovale?
- The mandibular nerve (V.3)
- The accessory meningeal artery
- The lesser petrosal nerve (occasionally)
What structure is found within the foramen rotundum?
The maxillary nerve (V.2)
