What is and Causes of indigestion
• Acid from the stomach irritating your throat or stomach lining
• Lifestyle (smoking, pregnancy, stress, obesity)
• Certain food and drink (alcohol)
• Other medications (ibuprofen)
• Stomach ulcers
• Hiatus hernia
Symptoms of indigestion
Heartburn
Blaming
Nausea
Bitter tast in mouth
Flatulence
Antacids, alginates and proton pump inhibitors
Antacid - neutralise acid
Aliginate - protective later
Pump - reduce amount of acid made
When to see a GP
Consistent indigestion
Severe pain

• also known as Alginic acid
• It comes as chewable tablets, liquid or sachets
• DO NOT take ibuprofen or aspirin with it.
Chemistry of gaviscon
Main ingredient is sodium alginate and this is derived from a natural seaweed hat creates a protective barrier
Legal drinking limit
80mg alcohol per 100ml blood
Depends on age, weight, metabolism adn amount of food eaten
Recommended no moe than 2-3 units man and 1-2 women
1 shot is 25ml is 1 unit
1 beer is 1 unit
1 cocktail is 2-4 units

Recomended amount of exercise
150min a day of moderate activity or 75min a week of vigorous activity
