Scene size-up (1-2)
1-Determines the scene/situation is safe
2-Determines the mechanism of injury/nature of illness
Scene size-up (3-5)
3-Determines the number of patients
4-Requests additional EMS assistance if necessary
5-Considers stabilization of the spine
Primary survey/resuscitation (1-3)
1-Verbalizes general impression of the patient
2-Determines responsiveness/level of consciousness
3-Determines chief complaint/apparent life-threats
Primary survey/resuscitation (4-7)
AIRWAY:
-Opens and assesses airway
-Inserts adjunct as indicated
BREATHING:
-Assess breathing
-Assures adequate ventilation
-Initiates appropriate oxygen therapy
-Manages any injury which may compromise breathing/ventilation
CIRCULATION:
-Checks pulse
-Assess skin [either skin color, temperature or condition]
-Assesses for and controls major bleeding if present
-Initiates shock management [positions patient properly, conserves body heat]
-Identifies patient priority and makes treatment/transport decision (based upon calculated GCS)
History Taking (1-2)
-Obtains baseline vital signs [must include BP, P and R]
-Attempts to obtain SAMPLE history
Secondary Assessment (1-3)
HEAD
-Inspects and palpates scalp and ears
-Assesses eyes
-Inspects mouth
-nose
-and assesses facial area
NECK
-Checks position of trachea
-Checks jugular veins
-Palpates cervical spine
CHEST
-Inspects chest
-Palpates chest
-Auscultates chest
