Path Buzzwords 8 Flashcards
Alcoholic pt + AKI - urine microscopy shows calcium oxalate crystals
Ethylene glycol poisoning
PML-RARA fusion gene
Acute promyelocytic leukaemia
PRV management
Regular venesection + hydroxcarbimide
High basophils
May indicate myelofibrosis
Patient is ?PRV - what tests do you do?
Analysis for JAK2 V617 mutation, serum erythropoeitin, bone marrow aspiration
Old patient + splenomegaly + not feverish or unwell
CML
Elongated (pencil) cells
Iron deficiency anaemia
Causes of metabolic alkalosis
Vomiting, hypokalaemia, HF, nephrotic syndrome
Osmolality
2(Na + K) + urea + glucose
Serum osmolality - 275-295
Urine osmolality - 300-900
Anion gap
Na + K - Cl - HCO3
Normal anion gap 8-16
Acute/symptomatic hyponatraemia management
Hypertonic (3%) saline bolus
Causes of SIADH

Type 1 respiratory failure
Hypoxia + normocapnia
V/Q mismatch - PE, pulmonary oedema
Type 2 respiratory failure
Hypoxia + hypercapnia
Hypoventilation - COPD, pneumonia, Guillian-Barre syndrome, opiates
Isovaleric acidaemia
Strong cheesy/sweety smell
Metabolic acidosis and hyperammonaemia
High anion gap
