When is preterite indefinido used & regular conjugations
The past indefinite is used to talk about actions already finished or to
express actions that happen in the middle of another action.
I went to the gay pride party
Fui a la fiesta del orgullo gay
I got up at 7:30 as usual and went to work.
Me levanté a las 7:30 como siempre y me fui a trabajar.
I cleaned my closet
limpié mi armario
i felt happy when my friend returned from her trip
me sentí feliz cuando mi amiga volvió de su viaje
Irregular forms of preterite indefinido & conjugations
Pero tenemos que tener en cuenta los siguientes aspectos:
■ Verbos acabados en –ucir (traducir) cambian a -uj-
■ Verbos acabados en vocal + er/ir (leer) cambian a -y-
■ Los verbos irregulares mantienen las irregularidades (dormir) cambia a -u-
Uses of pretérito perfecto & conjugations of to speak
The present perfect is used to talk about past actions, but which are somehow still connected to the present for the person speaking. We will use the present perfect with the temporary markers that indicate in
some way that the action is not yet completely finished. Such as “esta mañana”, “este año”,
“esta tarde o noche”,
“últimamente”,
“esta semana”, siempre, en toda mi vida, nunca
yo he hablado tú has hablado él, ella, usted ha hablado nosotros, nosotras hemos hablado vosotros, vosotras habéis hablado ellos, ellas, ustedes han hablado
this morning I did not go to the office because I can work remotely
esta mañana no he ido a la oficina porque puedo trabajar a distancia
■ I was on my way to work when I realized that I had left my report behind and
I had to go home to get it.
■ Iba camino del trabajo cuando me di cuenta de que me había dejado el informe y
tuve que volver a casa a buscarlo.
■ I encountered a lot of traffic, but made it in time for the meeting.
■ Encontré mucho tráfico, pero llegué a tiempo para la reunión.
■ At the meeting I spoke after the relevant introductions.
■ En la reunión hablé después de las presentaciones pertinentes.
When is preterite imperfecto used & regular conjugations
The imperfect tense is used in the following contexts: ÿ To
express past actions that have already been completed ÿ
To express continuous actions ÿ To express habitual actions
aba y ia (look up)
Within five minutes of arriving at the store
A los cinco minutos de llegar a la tienda
Five years after starting college …
A los cinco años de comenzar la universidad …
Seven months after getting married …
A los siete meses de casarme …
