Particulate theory of matter Flashcards
The particulate theory of matter helps explain what?
it helps explain the physical properties of matter and the differences between the three states. This theory helps us think about how matter behaves and helps us explain why different matter has different properties.
What is matter?
Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space.
What type of particles is matter made up of?
All matter is made of tiny particles.
what are particles attracted to?
each other
Are particles always moving?
Yes, particles are in constant motion
What are the three states of matter?
- Solid
- Liquid
- Gas
describe the shape of a solid, liquid and gas
1) Solid- Fixed, regular.
2) Liquid- takes the shape of the container of part of the container it is in.
3) Gas- takes the shape of the entire container it is in.
describe the volume of a solid, liquid, gas
solid- fixed
liquids- fixed
gas- variable, it expands to fill the container it is in
describe the compressibility of a solid, liquid, and gas
solid- difficult to compress
liquid- can be compressed very slightly
gas- very easy to compress
describe the density of a solid, liquid and gas
solid- usually high
liquid- usually lower than solids
gas-low
arrangement of particles in solids
packed closely together in a regular way
arrangement of particles in liquids
have small spaces in between them and are randomly arranged
arrangement of particles in the air
have large spaces between and are randomly arranged
forces of attraction in solids, liquids, gas
solids- strong
liquids- weaker than those between the particles in a solid
gas- very weak
what is the energy possessed by a solid
possesses very small amounts of kinetic energy
