Filtration Flashcards
What is filtration?
Filtration is a method of separating an insoluble solid which is suspended or settled from a liquid
How are the components separated?
Due to their different particle sizes
What happens when a mixture is filtered?
- the solid stays behind in the filter paper (it becomes the residue)
- the water passes through the filter paper (it becomes the filtrate)
What does the filter paper act as?
The filter paper acts as a selective physical barrier that allows the liquid to pass through it but does not allow the solid to pass through.
What does the same principle of the filter paper used in?
In purifying drinking water. Filter beds are used to remove suspended particles from the water.
What also uses filters?
Motor cars also use filters to remove solid dirt particles from oil in the engine
Filter paper
Has holes that are enough to let the liquid particles through, but are too small to allow the solid particles through
