Q

What is the definition of diffusion?

A

Diffusion is the movement of a substance from an area of high concentration to an area of lower concentration until the particles are evenly distributed.

Q

Diffusion can only take place in what and why?

A

Diffusion occurs in gases like air and liquids like water (fluids) because their particles can move around and collide with each other randomly.

Q

What are two examples of diffusion?

A

Diffusion is how smells spread out through the air and how concentrated liquids spread out when placed in water.

Q

Why would something diffuse faster? (ammonia/hydrogen chloride example)

A

(look at the ammonia gas and Hydrogen chloride example) it would diffuse faster if it is lighter and can move faster, so the particles would react closer to the side of the gas that diffuses slower

Q

Why would there be a difference if hot water is used instead of room temp. water?

A

When you increase heat energy the particles will gain kinetic energy and thus move faster and this will increase the rate at which diffusion will occur.
