particles - types of pressure Flashcards

hydrostatic pressure, HPP calculation, atmospheric pressure, differential pressure

1
Q

hydrostatic pressure explanation

A

the greater the height of the liquid above a certain point, the greater pressure that is exerted

Q

pressure equation

A

pressure = height x density x g
p = hpg

pressure - pascals (n/m^2)
height/depth - metres
density - kg/m^3
g - grav field strength

Q

atmospheric pressure explanation

A

created when molecules collide with surfaces
air is more dense close to the earth’s surface and decreases as you ascend
–> why mountaineers carry oxygen when climbing high

Q

differential pressure explanation

A

when there’s different substances either side of a boundary, the pressure may be different (could be problematic if the difference is big)

e.g.
- if a window were opened on a plane, the contents would be sucked out
- the smallest hole could cause an explosive decompression
