forces - moments (whatyouneed2know) Flashcards
definition of moment?
a MOMENT is a TURNING EFFECT around a PIVOT resulting from a FORCE acting on a RIGID BODY
moment equation? (rearranged too!)
moment = force x distance –> perpendicular distance to pivot
force = moment/
distance
distance = moment/
force
what are the measurement labels for:
- moment
- force
- distance
moment - newton metres (Nm)
force - Newtons (N)
distance - metres (m)
is it easier to use a longer or shorter spanner? why?
it is easier to use a longer spanner because if the distance from the pivot is larger, a smaller force is needed to rotate the object.
what is the principle of moments?
when an object isn’t rotating (balanced), the sum of the anticlockwise moments must equal the sum of the clockwise moments
principle of moments equation?
M1 + M2 = M3 + M4
–>
F1d1 = F2d2 = F3d3 + F4d4
F1d1 means:
force 1 x distance 1
