forces - impulse (whatyouneed2know) Flashcards
impulse equation
impulse = mv - mu = force x time
what is impulse?
the change in momentum
how do you cause a ball to change direction (force, time)
the wall must provide a FORCE to the ball the whole TIME the ball + wall are in contact
how do you find impulse?
change in momentum can be found by multiplying the FORCE applied by the TIME it is applied
measurement labels for:
- change in momentum
- force
- time
- impulse
change in momentum - kg m/s
force - N
time - s
impulse - Ns
since the mass is constant..
(time taken, amount of force etc..)
..increasing the time taken will decrease the amount of force needed to stop the motion
linking to impulse, to stop a car from moving..
an impulse is provided by the barrier
shorter collision time means?
a greater force
longer collision time means?
a lesser force
active safety features that reduce injuries during collision?
- increasing impact time
- decreasing the rate of momentum
(however change in momentum will always remain the same) - decrease the acceleration
- decrease force and reduce severity of injuries
