forces - collisions (whatyouneed2know) Flashcards
what is an elastic collision and what situation is it
it is where all energy and momentum is conserved in a collision
it is an ‘ideal’ situation
what is an inelastic collision and what situation is it
it is where kinetic energy is NOT conserved in a collision due to loss of thermal and sound energy
it is a ‘real world’ situation
what happens in a collision (using momentum, kinetic energy, conservation, all types of energy)
momentum is ALWAYS conserved but kinetic energy rarely is…
HOWEVER the total of all types of energy are always conserved
‘sticky’ collision
when objects JOIN together upon collision
‘rear-end’ collision
when one object CATCHES UP with another
‘explosion’ collision
when one large object SPLITS into smaller pieces
‘static’ collision
when ONE object is NOT MOVING at the start
‘head-on’ collision
when BOTH objects are moving towards EACH OTHER
