1) Patrick (1973) (cpo) - he joined a bad gang and abandoned it
2) Humphreys (1970) (cpo) - observed men and disguised himself and found out 14% of married men were gay
3) Griffin (1962) (cpo) - turned his skin black to experience racism in southern states
4) Barker (1984) (opo) - church has a bad rep, lived with them for 6 years, no brainwashing
5) Venkatesh (2009) (opo) - spent 18 months, spread over 7 years and lived with the gang, illegal violent behaviour

1) overt- can ask question and take notes openly
2) access - coverts can gain access
What are 2 advantages of ethical?
1) overt doesn’t need to participate in illegal activities
2) confidentiality
What are 2 advantages of theoretical?
1) interpretivists like this it’s more valid
2) verstehen - seeing the world through their eyes
What are 2 disadvantages of practical?
1) covert needs to get in and out which is difficult
2) cannot ask questions if covert and must rely on memory for the notes whicg is time consuming
What are 2 disadvantages of ethical?
1) deception if it’s covert
2) have to participate in immoral activities

1) positivists dislike cause it lacks a structure
2) overt - Hawthorne effect will change their behaviour
